Dolphin Facts

Dolphin have multiple colors...dark blue on the dorsal fin which runs the length of the body. Green on the top half of the fish and yellow on the bottom half. This makes for a beautiful fish. Males have a square forehead and they are called bulls. The females have a round head and are called cows.

Habitat ~~ Offshore of Florida from 50 feet of water to thousands of feet of water. Most of the time found around floating debris or seaweed which holds small schools of bait fish. Usually found where you see birds diving into the water.

Flavor Value ~~ One of the bests grilled, blackened, baked or fried. As you can see any way you cook it Dolphin is great!

Tackle ~~ When trolling use a medium to heavy rod with skirted ballyhoo or trolled lures. When you hook up and reeling the fish to the boat most of the time they are schoolies or peanuts. Keep the fish in the water next to the boat and if there are any other dolphin in the water they won't be afraid to come to the boat. Either with chunks or live bait you can entice or catch the other schoolies. If you are looking for bigger dolphin put a small sinker above a cirle hook with some live bait and drop down below the schoolies. That is where the big dolphin swim.

Baits ~~ Live or dead ballyhoo, goggle eye, sardines, pilchard, shrimp, crabs and squid

Size ~~ Legal size is 20 inches to the fork and ten per person per day in Florida.
