How to tie a Pilchard Fly

Bass Pro Shops Outdoors Online: Fly Fishing Banner

Pilchard flys are very effective when live bait is being pursued by preditors.

You cast into the school of bait with short jerks from the fly rod to make it appear like stunned bait. This allows the preditor to pick up the fly easily as if it were injured bait.

It can be cast along the shoreline and retrieved continuously to the angler. This fly is effective either inshore or offshore.

Step One

Wrap lead wire around the hook to add weight.

Step Two

Cut a small portion of white super hair and tie onto the bottom of a circle hook.

Step Three

Tie a portion of black super hair to the front of the hook.

Step Four

An inch past the rear of the hook tie both the black and white super hair together. It should be fluffed to make the body appear fuller. Trim the super hair 1/4 inch past the knot.

Step Five

Then tie a white flytail at the end. This will give the fly more action. To finish the fly add molded eyes to the front of the fly.
